Spicy Tartar Sauce

Delectable creamy spicy condiment

I love tartar sauce, I’ve even been known to dip fries into it. To me without tartar sauce, a fish sandwich is just boring. It adds zip to many things including hamburgers, sautéed green beans, veggie burgers, deep fried battered mushrooms, and of course fish and chips. Though my British friends would definitely argue that last suggestion! Tartar sauce is great mixed into deviled eggs and is the base for Russian dressing. Spicy Tartar Sauce adds a whole different dimension to this tasty condiment.

By changing the usual pickles to jalapenos this spicy tartar sauce can be put on top of fish tacos, Mexican grilled shrimp, or even try it on roasted butternut squash. Russian dressing and deviled eggs using spicy tartar sauce become zippy and spicy.

I’ve lightened up this tartar sauce with half non-fat Greek yogurt. By adding the yogurt it cuts the fat in half and yet it still tastes rich and creamy. This recipe calls for dried oregano and dried parsley; you could substitute fresh for either of them. However, I chose to use dried herbs to help soak up a bit of the excess liquid that Greek yogurt seems to always have.

This makes about 1½ cups and will keep for a couple of days in the refrigerator. Spicy Tartar Sauce is so easy to prepare. It can be whipped up in minutes and can be used right away. The flavors improve greatly however, if it sits overnight. I hope you try out this different version of tartar sauce. I know it will add some zip to your food.
