This is spicy Chex Mix is the Party snack mix you’ve been looking for! It is savory, slightly sweet, and got some heat! It is not too hot to overwhelm your taste buds. But it definitely has some zip to it. This is the party mix I have been making for years. Whenever I serve it, everyone can’t keep their hands out of it.

I used to make the recipe from the box of Chex cereal. I have always loved how fragrant the Chex mix smells as it bakes. However, it never seemed to be flavorful enough when It cooled for me, I always wanted more. I also love nuts, and the standard recipe never seemed to have enough of them. I decided to play around with the recipe, and now I make a fantastic spicy Chex Mix that everyone seems to love.

At some point about 10 years ago, I found this peanut company out of North Carolina called The Peanut Roasters. This company makes these incredible BBQ peanuts I discovered through a friend who brought some to work. I decided to order some of them on their website. I discovered they also make a chipotle and honey roasted peanut. These Hot Honeys are my, up until now, secret ingredient to making a fantastic spicy Chex Mix. I will leave the link here if you want to order some from them. They have a bunch of delicious products, including the mixed nuts I used and even really tasty chocolate covered nuts that are addictive. ( I do not get anything from them for writing this, I love this company) If you can’t find them or don’t want to order from the Peanut Roasters. Look for honey, and spicy coated peanut at your gourmet store.

I also ramped up the spices and added more of the Worcestershire sauce, which I think adds that umami flavor that makes Chex Mix so tasty. I know in the recipe on the box of Chex mix says you can make their recipe in the microwave. But I feel roasting this snack mix in the oven adds even more toasty flavor, so I would recommend you bake it. This spicy Chex Mix takes about an hour to make. But there is really not much work involved, just some occasional stirring.  Let it cool, and you will have a snack or bar mix that far exceeds the bland standard mix you find at your last party. I like to have a big jar of it on my kitchen shelf for anytime company comes to visit. I also wrote a post about a Korean spiced Chex mix last year that is also fantastic.

Servings: 12 cups
Ingredients
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 3 cups rice Chex cereal
  • 3 cups corn Chex cereal
  • 3 cups wheat Chex cereal
  • 2 cups Bugles corn snacks
  • 2 cups mixed fancy nuts
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 Tablespoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
  • 1 cup Hot Honeys peanuts
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 250°
  2. Place a large baking tray or cookie sheet with a rim in the oven with the butter, allow the butter to melt. It takes just a few minutes.
  3. While the butter is melting. Mix together the 3 Chex mixes, the bugles, and the mixed nuts in a large bowl.
  4. Take the hot pan out of the oven and add the Worcestershire sauce, soy, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, sea salt, and the Old bay Seasoning. Using a spatula mix it well and spread it out over the bottom of the pan.
  5. Mix in the cereal-nut mixture. Stir well to combine, making sure you don’t crush the cereal as you combine it. The key here is to coat the cereal as evenly as possible.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven at 250° for 1 hour. Stirring it every 15 minutes. The final Chex mix should be crisp, fragrant, and slightly toasted.
  7. Take out from the oven and stir in the hot honey peanuts. Allow to cool to room temperature.
Recipe Notes

This mix will keep for a month or two if sealed in a jar or big plastic bag.
