The Blackberry Margarita

The Blackberry Margarita

Blackberry margaritas are an absolutely fabulous drink for any time of the year. Several weeks ago, my beautiful niece got married in this fairytale setting in the mountains of Colorado. As is the custom nowadays, she had to have a signature cocktail. When the nuptials were done, we were invited to the upper deck of the castle (yes, she got hitched at a castle!) for some cocktails and reverie. On the bar was this big glass urn of this beautiful purple cocktail with slices of lime swirling around with all the ice. My brothers and I got a glass of this purple concoction, and we all circled around one of the tables to catch up. I saw one of my brother’s faces light up as he took a sip and knew this would be a great drink. This was the perfect cocktail for a celebration. It was lively and bright, with just the right amount of tart to sweet and a beautiful color that said festive. This was a fun cocktail.

The Blackberry Margarita

If you follow me at all, you know that blackberries are a thing in my family. I grew up picking them and having them in many different ways. I’ve posted many recipes over the years, including this ice cream and almond-topped cobbler, which are both fantastic. So it was only fitting my niece chose blackberry as the preferred flavor for her special day. I bet she didn’t even think about it that way, but I certainly did!

So back to the cocktail, my niece was wonderful and shared her recipe and how she made them for her wedding. The blackberry margarita is very easy to make. She found this blackberry syrup on Amazon already premade, and it works fantastic for this kind of cocktail. I have included a recipe for making it from scratch, but the syrup works perfectly without the step of making it. The rest is just tequila, lime, and orange liqueur. (She used triple sec, but I found Cointreau works wonderfully too.) Stir it up

wedding

I am incredibly proud of my niece and what she has become, even though we don’t get together as often as I would like. She does have her own life, after all. I can see she is well on her way to a beautiful life. Ok, that is all for this week. Please think of others in your choices. We all need each other to get through these crazy times, and understanding each other will be much less of a struggle. Until next time!

Course: cocktails
Cuisine: American
Keyword: blackberry, blackberry margarita
Servings: 1
Ingredients
Blackberry syrup (for a pitcher, double this amount)
  • 6 oz fresh blackberries
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup water
The Blackberry Margarita
  • 3 oz 2 shots silver tequila
  • 1 ½ oz 1 shot Blackberry syrup, store-bought or homemade
  • 1 ½ oz 1 shot orange liqueur, triple sec or Cointreau
  • 1 ½ oz fresh lime juice
For a pitcher of Margaritas (Makes 8)
  • 2 cups 16 oz silver tequila
  • 1 cup blackberry syrup store-bought or homemade
  • 1 cup 8 oz orange liqueur, triple sec or Cointreau
  • 1 cup fresh lime juice
Instructions
For the syrup (about ½ cup syrup)
  1. Combine the blackberries, sugar, and water in a small saucepan.
  2. Bring the mixture to a boil, reduce to a simmer and let cook for 5-10 minutes until the fruit has thoroughly cooked.
  3. Press the mixture through a fine mesh strainer and cool.
  4. The syrup can be stored in the fridge for up to 6 weeks.
For the margaritas
  1. Fill a cocktail pitcher with ice for the individual cocktail or a large pitcher if making the full recipe.
  2. Combine tequila, blackberry syrup, orange liqueur, and lime juice in a cocktail pitcher or more giant pitcher for a full pitcher amount.
  3. Stir until very cold.
  4. And pour it into a glass filled with more ice. I like a single old-fashioned glass for this cocktail.
  5. Garnish with fresh blackberries and lime slices.
Recipe Notes

For a fun decorative touch, you can salt or sugar the rims of the glasses by running a lime wedge around the edge of each glass and dipping the wet rim into a plate filled with large salt crystals or sugar.
